4th 9 Weeks Checkpoint

Thursday May 11

4th 9 Weeks Checkpoint

Skills Included:

  • Converting Measurements
  • Volume
  • Data Patterns and Tables
  • Coordinate Grids/Graphing
  • Quadrilaterals

New Skill 5/8/17

Analyze patterns in data and graph data.

5.OA.3: Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. For example, given the rule “Add 3” and the starting number 0, and given the rule “Add 6” and the starting number 0, generate terms in the resulting sequences, and observe that the terms in one sequence are twice the corresponding terms in the other sequence. Explain informally why this is so.

Dividing with Unit Fractions and Whole Numbers

Dividing with Fractions

5/1-5/5

This week we will be working with dividing unit fractions and whole numbers. This includes dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. Students are expected to model the process.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.7
Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.

Resources:

Dividing Whole Numbers by Unit Fractions

4/24 - 4/28

CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.7.b - Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients. For example, create a story context for 4 ÷ (1/5), and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient. Use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that 4 ÷ (1/5) = 20 because 20 x (1/5) = 4.

Welcome to Fifth Grade!!

I am so excited to get to know everyone and get this year off to a great start!

Parents, be sure to check back regularly to get updates about your child's math assignments and the topics we will be covering in class. I will try to provide links to resources on our current topics as we work through the various math skills.

Follow this link to an overview of what to expect in fifth grade math: http://www.cgcs.org/cms/lib/DC00001581/Centricity/Domain/36/ParentGuide_Math_5.pdf

Flower Planter Project Donations

Excitement is building about our new math project! Students will be planting and growing seeds into beautiful flower plants and creating planter boxes for those plants. These activities will help us to explore concepts of volume, measurement, and data collection. This is big project that has been made possible by support from our local Tractor Supply, Walmart, and Lowe's.

I would like to say a big thank you to these businesses that have contributed to our project! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Walmart contributed a gift card that was used to purchase seeds, seed starting mix, watering cans, and more!

Tractor supply donated spray bottles and trowels!!

Lowe's donated soil, wood sealant, adhesive and hardware cloth!
